How to Remove a Bad Smell from Your Workplace

Date: 16-05-2019

Exhaust fans and open windows will only go so far towards eliminating bad smells. Some air fresheners can even make things worse as it simply introduces a new smell to the environment rather than eliminate the bad one. To remove a really bad smell, typically coming from the bathroom, you need to follow these steps.

Step 1: Develop an odour control program

An odour control program is a planned cleaning procedure that utilises an odour counteractant with non-conflicting fragrance to neutralise odours in a given area, thereby creating a more pleasant environment.

Basically, that means you need a range of products all working towards one common goal – total malodour neutralisation.

Neutralisation is the process of combining fragrance materials with chemical compounds to provide immediate and long-term odour control. The fragrance materials usually mask the malodour for short term relief and allow the chemical compounds time to change the molecular structure of the malodour, and thus eliminate the odour permanently.

The key is to ensure all products used have the same, or a compatible, fragrance. There’s nothing worse than smelling two, three or four different fragrances in one workplace or specific room. Often, this assortment of different fragrances is worse than the original bad smell which they are intended to relieve.

Step 2: Choose an odour neutralisation product

In order to neutralise an odour, a product must do at least one of two things:

  1. Remove a malodorous molecule from the air so that it never reaches your nasal receptors
  2. Change the shape (molecular geometry) of a malodorous molecule so that it won’t fit properly into your nasal receptors.

TBC Distribution recommends the Nilodor range of products – in fact, we were named the ESG Asia Pacific 2018 Nilodor Inc. Dealer of the Year. Nilodor products contain a unique chemical formulation which not only removes malodours from the air but also chemically modifies many malodours so that they can’t fit into your nasal receptors. As an added bonus, the products leave a mild, pleasant fragrance which accents any environment.

Step 3: Target multiple surfaces

Trying to remove the smell from the air isn’t always enough, you need to target the cause. In most workplaces, the bad smell is coming from the bathroom. Here’s a four step guide to a fresher washroom:

  1. Surface Odour Control – Mop the floors with Nilium Odour Neuraliser
  2. Source Removal – Spray toilets and urinals with Urine Digester
  3. Fixture Care – Reduce ongoing urine odours with Nilodor Urinal Screens and Nilodor Ultra Air Clips
  4. Air Care – Reduce air borne smells and add a pleasant smell to the bathroom with the Nilotron Automatic Aerosol Dispenser or Ultra Air Room Freshener

If the bad smell is coming from the kitchen, try cleaning the drain with Nilozyme Trap & Drain Treatment.

Step 4: Enjoy the new fresh smell

Ah, clean air again.
